Safety Information

We recommend that parents become familiar with how to put baby to sleep in a safe environment. This means education in sleep positions, what items not to put in the cot and monitoring room temperature.

INFANTS

Choose a firm mattress that fits snugly in the cot

ALWAYS use a cot sheet that fits securely on the mattress and wraps around the mattress corners

Cot bumpers are not recommended to be used in the cot

NEVER place infants to sleep on pillows, cushions, adult beds, waterbeds, beanbags or any other surface not specifically designed for infant sleep

Infants should always sleep in a cot, which meets current Australian standards

FOR BABY UNDER 12 MONTHS

Sleep baby with face uncovered (no doonas, pillows, lambs wool, bumpers or soft toys)

Avoid exposing babies to tobacco smoke before and after birth

Provide a safe sleeping environment (safe cot, safe mattress, safe bedding)

For newborns, consider swaddling

Position your baby’s feet at the bottom of the cot

Sleep baby on the back from birth, not on the tummy or side

Do not overdress your baby.  Consider using a sleeper or other sleep clothing as an alternative to any covering.
